RAILWAY RUNNING ROOM
Location: Jaisalmer
Area: [Insert Area]

This Railway Running Room was designed as a dedicated rest and accommodation facility for locomotive pilots, assistant loco pilots, guards, and railway crew members during their mandatory rest periods between duties. The design combines operational functionality with the timeless architectural character of Rajasthan, creating a comfortable, secure, and restorative environment for railway personnel.
Requirements
The primary objective was to create a modern railway running room that offers high-quality accommodation, rest facilities, dining areas, recreation zones, and administrative spaces while ensuring comfort, safety, and operational efficiency.
The facility was required to accommodate railway crew members arriving from different routes and provide an environment conducive to physical recovery and mental relaxation before their next assignment. The design also needed to reflect regional architectural identity and create a dignified institutional presence.
.
Design Intent
The design intent was to reinterpret traditional Rajasthani courtyard architecture into a functional railway accommodation facility. The large central courtyard improves natural ventilation, daylight penetration, and visual connectivity while creating a peaceful environment within the campus.
Continuous arched corridors surrounding the courtyard provide shaded circulation and comfortable movement throughout the building. The repetitive rhythm of arches and jaali screens creates a strong architectural identity while reducing heat gain and enhancing airflow.
Corner towers, chhatris, ornamental parapets, and heritage detailing reinforce the regional character of the development, transforming a utilitarian railway facility into a landmark institutional campus.
The overall planning emphasizes privacy, comfort, and ease of movement, ensuring that crew members can rest efficiently and comfortably between journeys.
Materials Used
The project utilizes a warm sandstone-inspired material palette that reflects Rajasthan's architectural heritage. Decorative stone textures, carved arches, jaali screens, and traditional detailing create a timeless appearance while ensuring durability and low maintenance.
Natural stone paving, ornamental metal gates, architectural lighting, and landscape elements complement the building's heritage character. The use of deep recessed openings and shaded corridors improves thermal comfort and reduces energy consumption.
Landscaped lawns, courtyard gardens, and boundary planting contribute to a tranquil setting that supports rest and relaxation.
